Position start date: Immediately, for a 3-year term of employment

A postdoctoral research opportunity, to be filled immediately, is available at Department of Food &Bioproduct Sciences, University of Saskatchewan. The position will be in support of an antimicrobial research (AMR) research program on how removal of antibiotics from the animal production chain (i.e., hog production) impacts the prevalence of AMR associated with production facilities. The position will involve molecular (q-PCR, digital-PCR, MiSeq high throughput sequencing) and culture-based microbial techniques for assessing the prevalence of key genetic markers or indicator organisms in these settings. Funding for this project is provided by the Agriculture Development Fund of Saskatchewan, and NSERC.

Highly-motivated, self-starting individuals are invited to apply for this postdoctoral position, which offers a unique research opportunity with relevance to the agricultural sector, as well as public health. The candidate will possess a Ph.D. with relevant experience in molecular techniques, as well as some background in bioinformatics, along with a strong microbiological foundation. Knowledge of high throughput sequencing and data pipelines would be an asset in assessing the microbial diversity associated with different hog barns. Good hands-on skills to support the safe cultivation and analysis of potential hog/human pathogens (while work in a biosafety level 2 facility) is necessary. Also essential to this position will be: strong organizational and multi-tasking skills, good oral and written communication abilities, strong technical writing for drafting reports and manuscripts, the ability and desire to train and mentor graduate students, and evidence of successfully publishing research as first author.
