Job Description

The Stavrinides Laboratory in the Department of Biology at the University of Regina is seeking a Research Technician to undertake an innovative research project exploring the biological control of Canada thistle using a bacterial plant pathogen. The objectives of this project are:

  • Identify P. syringaepv. tagetis strains that are highly virulent on Canada thistle.
  • Evaluate mixtures of strains that maximize aggressiveness and specificity on Canada thistle.
  • Evaluate leading single and polymicrobial formulations for potential application as pre-emergent weed control.
  • Identify the biosynthetic genes of abacterial phytotoxin, and evaluate its potential as astandalone herbicide.

Qualifications
Candidates should have at least an undergraduate degree in microbiology / molecular biology/ biotechnology/ biochemistry / or a related discipline, and should have some research experience in microbiology, host-microbe interactions, and/or plant systems. The candidate will be required to culture bacteria, grow plants, and perform plant assays, and should have some knowledge of experimental design, and the ability to analyze and interpret results. Candidates must be independent, organized, and able to work professionally in a collaborative team environment.

Salary and Term
Appointment is for 1 year beginning May 2018 (negotiable) at an annual salary of $35,000 CAD, with opportunity for renewal based on satisfactory performance (up to 3 years).
