Job Description

Applications will be reviewed commencing the closing application date and may continue until the position is filled.

Closing Application Date: 1/5/2019

Anticipated Start Date: 1/8/2019

The Department of Biological Sciences at Thompson Rivers University is made up of a diverse, collaborative group of faculty offering a B.Sc. degree with majors in: Biology; Animal Biology; Ecology and Environmental Biology; Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology; and, in collaboration with the Department of Physical Sciences, Chemical Biology. Core to these majors is a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentorship as well as collaboration within the Department and with colleagues across campus. The successful candidate will support our undergraduate Honours program and develop a positive environment in which students are encouraged to grow as independent learners and critical thinkers. Faculty are encouraged to be reflective teachers and engage with supporting programs such as the TRU Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). Our research philosophy emphasizes cross-disciplinary approaches. Research themes include: the evolutionary frameworks guiding fundamental and applied ecology; responses of humans and diverse organisms—and communities--to external stressors, including biochemical responses; the use of classical and modern statistical, bioinformatic, and genomic tools to interrogate hypotheses and develop solutions for environmental problems.

Currently, the Department includes Faculty with expertise in marine and terrestrial invertebrate biology, as well as insect, bird, bat, plant, microbial (Bacteria, Archaea, fungi), and human biology.

We are currently seeking a Biochemist with broad scholarly teaching experience in biochemistry. The ideal candidate will have experience with techniques that could include radioisotope tracer methodology, liquid chromatography, GC-MS, fluorescent labelling/tagging, gene cloning, heterologous protein production, protein purification, enzyme kinetics, mutagenesis, RNAseq, and quantitative PCR or other biochemical tools. This candidate will contribute to the core themes of the Department, Faculty and University.

The desired candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, with strong undergraduate teaching and mentorship experience (post-doctoral experience preferred).
