Job Description

Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled

We are seeking at least two PhD (or MSc) students to conduct research on the genome engineering of bacterial strains to efficiently produce a range of mcl-PHA bioplastics using low cost feedstock. Petroleum derived plastics for packaging are currently of great concern due to their widespread use coupled with their environmental persistence. Biodegradable plastics could be a solution, but their adoption is limited by cost of production. Ability to efficiently convert available waste materials to bioplastics would reduce the cost of production and help to improve commercial viability. Thesis research projects would involve the genome engineering of Pseudomonas, Sinorhizobium, and/or Cupriavidus strains to control mcl-PHA production and feedstock utilization.

Requirements: Applicants should have experience in Microbiology or Molecular Biology research. Previous experience with molecular methods, molecular genetics and/or systems biology would be an asset. Canadian citizens and landed immigrants will be given first consideration.

Appointment and salary: This fully funded position provides a stipend of at least $24,000 per year, inclusive of teaching assistantships.

Application Instructions

Please send an email (Subject: Genome Engineering for Bioplastics) to Dr. Trevor Charles with a cover letter describing previous research experience and interests, a CV including contact information for two references, and a copy of university transcripts (unofficial is fine).
