The Cox Lab studies the genetic and molecular basis of antibiotic resistance mechanisms and virulence mechanisms in pathogenic bacteria. The ultimate goal is the development of new therapeutics to control bacterial infections. We are looking for a motivated and organized individual to join our research team. The applicant will be working in a welcoming and dynamic environment with passionate and dedicated graduate students. The applicant will be communicating with the team members on a regular basis. The position is full-time (35 h/week) and available immediately; however, the start date is flexible, with a preferable start date occurring on or before January 2021. The position is within Grant & Trust Funded Administrative & Technical (GTAT) Staff Salary Band C.

Minimum Qualifications:
• University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology). Previous research experience is required (less than one-year).

The successful applicant will have technical expertise in:
• Molecular biology (e.g., PCR, cloning, electroporation, genomic manipulation)
• Working with microbial organisms and good aseptic technique (Biosafety Level 2 experience is an asset)
• Protein extraction and purification
• The candidate must have a proven ability to be productive, with excellent attention to details and meticulous bench work

Typical duties may include some or all of the following:
• Enforcing laboratory safety rules and procedures
• Ensuring biohazardous material is handled in compliance with university procedures
• Writing and updating lab manuals and/or standard operating procedures
• Organizing laboratory and stock, maintaining inventory, replenishing/ordering supplies as required
• Sourcing equipment/supplies from external vendors, obtaining quotes, and may include some limited negotiation on pricing
• Preparing and/or maintaining media, buffer, reagents, solutions, cultures and related material according to test specifications for routine laboratory use
• Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting problems with basic lab equipment
• Ensuring sterilization/decontamination of laboratory material and glassware, and appropriate disposal of waste materials
• Sets up, tests, calibrates, operates and maintains complex laboratory equipment; some troubleshooting to resolve equipment malfunctions before arranging for repairs; analyzes test results to measure the performance of developed systems and makes adjustments to experimental prototypes/systems as required
• Serving as a source of information or reference on standard research techniques, and trains others in technical procedures or operations, including use of precision laboratory equipment and instruments and provide recommendations on appropriate use, including guidance to students on use of equipment or standard research techniques for their research projects
• Determining the acceptability of data based on provided quality control parameters; recognizes obvious deviations in research results and anomalies and flags for senior researcher to address
• Contributing to initial drafts of scientific reports, manuscripts, grant proposals and other research presentations and documentation, including formatting of manuscripts, tables and figures for submission to scientific journals
• Collecting, recording, and analyzing experimental results requiring an understanding of the specific research discipline in order to make appropriate observations, identify anomalies, and/or select appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to produce required data
• May schedule, assign and check work performed by junior lab members
