Job Description

Applications will be accepted until position is filled.

I am recruiting a post-doctoral researcher with experience in the areas of microbiology, bioremediation (or biochemistry), genomics and molecular biology. Naphthenic acids accumulate in tailings ponds and must be ultimately removed before water and land reclamation. Bioremediation is one approach that works to treat naphthenic acids and is scalable to the large volumes of stored oil sands-process affected water (OSPW). The mechanisms of bacterial bioremediation of naphthenic acids are poorly understood.

We are using transcriptomics and synthetic biology to develop whole bacterial biosensors for the detection of naphthenic acids. In addition to using these biosensors as an alternative to analytical chemistry, these high throughput screening tools can also be used to identify bioremediation genes from metagenomic libraries. By identifying genes required for naphthenic acids bioremediation, it will help improve the strategies for treatment of the tailings ponds.

We have a small group in the University of Calgary that is part of a large, shared, space with diverse microbiology colleagues. I am looking for someone to take a leadership role in the lab, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, in addition to carrying out exciting research projects. The salary will be paid by Athabasca University but the research will take place in the University of Calgary.

Application Instructions

Please email me if you are interested in this position, with a current CV and statement of your research experience and skills and share a little about who you are. Funding is through a Mitacs Accelerate fellowship, with up to 3 years of support. Funding is already in place and can begin as soon as a candidate is identified. There will be regular interaction and networking with our oilsands industry partner. Please contact me for more information: slewenza@athabascau.ca.

Qualifications. Candidates should have a recent PhD degree in microbiology, bioremediation or a related field. Experience in molecular biology and bioinformatics of microbial genomics is required.

Salary $50,000 / year
