Job Description

Qualifications :

  • BSc/MSc in Microbiology, Bioinformatics or related field;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to focus on repetitive tasks and to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team

You will join the dairy microbiology and gut ecology group funded by NSERC and the Dairy Farmers of Ontario. Experience in qPCR and some bioinformatics is required, while an understanding of microbial ecosystems would be an advantage. You will contribute to the analysis of food and fecal samples, including DNA, RNA, protein and metabolite isolation from pure and mixed communities of microbes, as well as preparing libraries for sequencing and analyzing the data using multivariate statistics. Microbial isolates will be identified, subtyped and whole genome sequencing carried out with selected representatives. The research program will interface with related disciplines such as food science, molecular biology and genetics, as well as animal and nutritional sciences. Approaches included are classic microbiology, metabolomics, proteomics, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to understand the impact of microbial interactions on product quality and gastrointestinal function.

The contract will be for one year, with renewal conditional on performance and continued funding availability.


  • You will work closely with the principal investigator, postdoctoral scientists, graduate and undergraduate students in planning and carrying out research protocols in the defined research areas (conducting experiments, preparing material, recording data, analyzing the results).
  • You will assist with other research activities including coordination with other team members and operation of the research, undergraduate and graduate student projects;
  • You will carry out duties related to managing supplies and lab function, as well as preparation of reports and sections of manuscripts (research documentation).

Conditions : The position is available immediately (start date is negotiable).

Hourly rate : $28 – $31 to start, commensurate with experience
