CSM President’s Newsletter December 2013
Dear fellow microbiologists,
On behalf of the CSM executive I would like to extend an invitation for all to attend next year annual conference in Montreal.
IUMS-CSM joint meeting
Next year’s meeting will be an occasion to expand our microbiology collaboration with colleagues from around the world. This international meeting has in the past attracted thousands of participants. Montreal as the host city constitutes an important asset. Science will also be at the “rendez-vous” with renowned speakers in the field of bacteriology, virology and mycology.
CSM specific activities as the Student’s competitions (oral and poster) will take place as usual. This year all students participating in these competitions will have to write an extended abstract (1000 words) to be considered. This abstract will have to be transmitted to the Education committee at: SymposiumCompetition@csm-scm.org or PosterCompetition@csm-scm.org by January 30, 2014. CSM travel awards will be available to those participating in these events as long as they did not receive a travel support from IUMS 2014. Please refer to the CSM website http://csm-scm.ca for further details. Please note that the online registration and abstract submissions have to be done through the IUMS website: http://www.montrealiums2014.org
The CSM president will host a wine and cheese (President’s reception) and all CSM members are invited. At this occasion, the various awards will be presented to the recipients and the passing of the hat and gavel to next year’s president will take place. Food will also be provided at the Annual General Meeting if you confirmed your presence.
Nominations of candidates for awards
The CSM confers awards to outstanding students, early career, and more senior Canadian microbiologists :
CSM Murray Award for career achievement: Award recognizing the exceptional career of a senior researcher.
Fisher Scientific Award: Recognize new researchers in the microbiological sciences.
Armand-Frappier Outstanding Student Award: Award for graduate students.
Application deadline for all three awards is April 1st, 2014.
CSM Undergraduate Award: Recognize outstanding promise in an undergraduate student.
CSM Graduate Ambassador Award: Enable an outstanding graduate student or early career postdoc (within 2 years of graduating) to present research at two or more Canadian academic institutions.
Application deadline for these two awards is April 30, 2014.
I encourage you to nominate candidates who you feel should be honoured by their peers and colleagues. Please refer to the Awards page for the nomination information
CSM annual fees
A vote was taken from November 25 to December 10, by CSM members to change the membership fees so that the applicable taxes would be added over the annual fees as determined by the province of residence of each member. The members vote indicated their approval and these changes will be reflected in the 2014 membership online form.
CSM in the media
As CSM members represent hundreds of specialists that could be of interest for the Canadian media we encourage you to take special care when supplying CSM with keywords describing your area of expertise. These keywords can be modified, if you wish, at anytime by accessing your membership form online. Keep in mind that the CSM member’s directory could and will be used by written and spoken media to reach experts.
CSM membership
CSM membership has been quite stable for the last few years with about 500 members of which more than half are ordinary members. As the membership is the base for our Society I invite you to convince colleagues and students to join the Society in 2014.
Do not forget to renew your membership for 2014 when you receive the reminder E-mail in January.
In closing…
On behalf of the CSM executive and secretariat I would like to wish you and your families all the best for next year. Happy holidays! Merry Christmas!
Sincerely,
Daniel Dubreuil
