CSM President Letter - March 2022

I hope that you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy. Truthfully, it is hard to find the right words in this moment other than: take care of yourself and take care of those around you. It is ok to not be ok, to be distracted by world events, and to feel worn down. I do know that the path towards meaningful restoration, whenever that comes, will be one that we must walk together, so support one another when you can and how you can.

I am writing with a number of updates from our community.

First, as many of you may be aware, our Society and community is in mourning. Our Founding President, Dr. Robert Murray, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2022 at the age of 102. The Society stands as an enduring legacy to his vision of “a much-needed catalyst and unifier for the diverse applied and basic microbiologists of the country.” We are currently discussing how best to celebrate his life and his contributions at this year’s conference and beyond. Please reach out with any suggestions that you might have. Family and friends would welcome any condolences, memories, and photographs that you are able to share: https://www.amgfh.com/condolences/obituary.aspx?id=174739

Registration for our annual conference is now open. The 71st Annual Conference of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists will be held at the University of Guelph from June 26-29thThe abstract deadline for the student competitions and postdoctoral symposium is March 21st, 2022. The deadline for general abstracts is March 27th.

To provide maximum flexibility to our members, we are pleased to offer a virtual registration option that will include: live/synchronous attendance for the Keynote, 3 Awards lectures, Student Symposium, Post-doctoral Fellows Symposium, and the CSM Sections Symposia. While all talks will be in-person, a hybrid poster session with an online component is planned. Thanks again to the longest serving Local Organizing Committee for their hard work and creative ideas. More information about the ProgramAccommodation, etc. can be found at: https://event.fourwaves.com/csm-scm2022guelph/pages

The annual conference will also present us with an opportunity to recognize outstanding scientists and their achievements. I would like to applaud all the nominees for a CSM Award this year and to express my sincere thanks to the members of each award committee for their service. Our membership answered the call to apply and we had a number of strong candidates this year – thank you for your efforts and “keep your stick on the ice.”
